Who Was The First Person To Have The West Nile Virus? Uncovering The Origins Of The Disease

We know the first person to be diagnosed with West Nile Virus was a woman in the West Nile district of Uganda in 1937. While this tells us when the virus was first discovered, we don’t know if she was the first person to contract the virus. The virus may have been circulating for many years before it was identified.

It was only later in 1953 that scientists discovered West Nile Virus in birds (crows and columbiformes) in the Nile delta region. These discoveries helped scientists understand how the virus was transmitted. This is where the term “West Nile Virus” comes from.

It’s important to remember that while West Nile Virus is now considered a widespread health concern, it was only discovered in 1937, with the first documented case in a woman in the West Nile district of Uganda. Even though we know when the first case was recorded, it’s important to remember that the virus could have been circulating for some time before that.
